Introduction

Tiling around corners and over projecting edges, such as window reveals, is less daunting than you might think. Most of the wall will have been tiled using field tiles, which have straight, unglazed edges.

For edging fields of tiles, you can buy special RE (round edge) tiles, which have one edge rounded and glazed for a neat edge; REX tiles, which have two adjacent edges rounded and glazed; and mitred tiles, which are rounded 'strips' used for 'turning' corners. There are also plastic edging strips available in a range of colours to blend or contrast with the tiles. These are held in place while the last row of tiles is pressed into position.

When you tile around a corner or around a window, tile up to the edge, then use RE tiles on the reveal so they lap the edges of the surrounding tiles. Fitting into a corner may involve cutting a tile down to size. Keep any cut tiles for the back of the reveal.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Measure and mark

Tiling into a corner will invariably mean cutting a tile to size. Don't assume the edge is straight and true; each tile must be measured and cut individually. Remember also to allow for the normal spacing between tiles. If spacers weren't supplied with your tiles, you can use matchsticks or pieces of thick card.

2 Projecting corners

The edges of projecting corners such as around window reveals should be finished with RE (round edge tiles), keeping any cut border tiles to the back of the reveal. REX tiles can be used where two adjacent edges protrude.

3 Feature tiles

Where patterned tiles are used as feature tiles, avoid cutting them. You will need to spend a little more time planning their position at the setting-out stage - especially if you want full-patterned tiles to meet at corners. Interest can also be added by tiling one wall plain in one colour and the other using patterned tiles or tiles in a contrasting colour.

• When fixing battens, leave the nail heads protruding so that they can easily be removed when the adhesive has dried.
• Take care to ridge your adhesive to the correct depth, as the ridges are essential for strong tile adhesion.
• Keep checking with a spirit.
